One reason may be it took 15 mins to produce a photo. That would be very uncomfortable to have to smile for that long.
It also was not considered the appropriate to smile for a photo since it was not done often and considered a great event.

Oh my, I hope that fashion doesn't return. All you see is the head and hands, okay in the winter up in Ernie von Schledorn country, but oh my the summer heat. Although, that is a very pretty skirt the lady in the front row was wearing.

i have a tablecloth made by my grandmother, a proper victorian lady--the pattern is not applique, but, rather, a heavy embroidery in silk thread. the pattern on mine is very art nouveau, done in gold, and each of the motifs is edged in black silk stitching. the patterns feel as though they have some kind of padding in them to make them more dimentional, but it is all stitching--no fabric involved. i have loved having it--and it's in my middle daughter's hands, now. and in all the photos of her as a young woman, there was no smiling wasted. gotta love those old swedes!
