For all those who have asked this question, here is how I came up with my pattern.

I hand drew the Viking head to the size I needed, then I traced each section backwards on freezer paper and ironed them onto the fabric.

Once I rough cut the pieces out of fabric, I removed the freezer paper and applied Wonder Under onto the fabrics with the freezer paper on top of the Wander Under. Then I cut accurate pieces of the fabric out.
I did it this way so I could save on the Wander Under.

Remove the freezer paper and the paper on the Wander Under and place the parts onto the background fabric and iron in place.

Then each piece was stitched down with satin stitching, I stared on the face features & hair lines first and then worked around all the main parts. Hope that helps.

If you have a picture of the Viking head or any other picture for that matter, you could go to a copier store and have them enlarge it for you. I don't have one close to me so I enlarged it as big as I could, then had to draw it larger by hand. It took a few tries but I finally got it.

Pretty much this was done like most applique projects you see done by machine, I think. I don't applique much, almost never but with projects like this, it's a must do thing.

Your quilt is far more impressive than our Vikings are.

    Congratulations on a beautiful quilt!
