Vintage Beauties I purchased today

It looks like the general consensus is that I should completely finish these quilts (layer, quilt and bind) before attempting to treat the stains on the one top. Is that correct? If I use unbleached muslin for the backing on these quilts, should it be washed first for shrinkage before beginning to quilt??

I have had old quilt tops with stains. I usually just wash them on the hand wash cycle of my machine, using small amount of regular laundry detergent to see if that takes it out. After washing check to see if the stains are still in it. If they are do not put it in the dryer. Drying it would really set in the stain. While wet, if the stains are still in it I mix a small amount of comet with water to make a paste and put that on the stained area. Let it sit for about 15 min. and then run it thru the hand washing cycle again. If the stain isn't out then you can forget getting it out. That has been my experience anyway.
PS: I read this board all the time but have only posted a couple times. I love this board and all the expert advise that I get here. Thanks

We have a quilt like the first one. It is the next to be repaired. Was done by Grandmother and belongs to my daughter now. This pattern is very hard to do. I am glad it does not take as many squares as the one I am working on now.

For stain removal... Always TEST in a small corner before putting ANYTHING on the entire thing. I don't know if this will work for your stain because I would assume you have no idea what the stain is. I have had success removing many stains with a mixture of Dawn dish soap and peroxide. On the things I have used this mixture on it does not bleach the color out, just the stain. I gently rub the mixture into the stain by hand, let it soak the stain out and then rinse in the washer. Good Luck. Your quilt tops are a beautiful find.

You can see the bad spots on the quilt. If one part of the star is bad, the whole star needs to be replaced. This quilt is not large and I asked my daughter if she would like to have a border on it so it would be larger and she said it is the perfect size to cuddle up with on the couch to study or watch a movie. (She is almost finished with her Masters.)

Wow, these will be even more spectacular once they are quilted. I couldn't even pick a favorite but that last one sure does have some work put into it!!! Wouldn't it be so nice to have a name to put with them? I always think it's such a shame when we don't know who pieced/quilted a quilt. So glad that someone who appreciates them found them! Good for you!!!

WOW! Great find! I would spray with Shout and then I put the top in a pillow cover that has a zipper..wash in machine on delicate setting...lay flat to dry. Those will be stunning with muslin on the back.
