I have used the sharpie permanent pens on my quilts for putting my lables on the back of quilts and have washed and dried them and the writing has stayed on, don't think that you will have a problem if you used a pen. But think that if you embroidered them it would look even more beautiful and cute. By the way nice job. It is really a sweet wall quilt. Your friend will really love and enjoy it for years to come.
