    Is the issue of batting a really stupid question on a rag quilt? Hmmm, so much to learn.

    Yes, it is smaller than 50 x 80...just used that figure because they're 10" squares.. It's still a good size lap quilt. Plenty large enough for a guy :) Be sure your fabric will fray when washed. I used warm and natural batting and I made the batting squares 8". I really wouldn't have had to use batting because flannel is warm but I wanted it to be "toasty"...LOL.
