I am thinking a plain border so as not to "fight" the pattern?

You should pick one of the darker colors and use that as the first framing border. I would have at least two border fabrics for your quilt.

This is a spectacular wedding quilt.
Plain borders sound good.

I'm with you. A plain border(or borders) would look best. Your bargello is so beautiful that it should be center stage and not compete with a pieced border.
