    I like the background suggestion for applique too. I would put butterflies, dragonflies, bees, maybe birds on the upper part. Some little frogs and and maybe some lily pads on the bottom.

    First, divide it lengthwise to have two different hanging floral strips. Then, maybe, cat on the windowsill looking out at the garden. If you're into the old-fashioned English crinoline ladies or birds at a birdbath, it could be the background.
    How about a garden scene with a weeping tree dripping with flowers? Background for butterflies?
