the only colors you an use and not steal the thunder from the panel is beige and brown, imo. the panel is VERY subdued and any color will pop. how about straight borders of shades of browns separating the panels, or maybe shaped into smallish squares, so the panels remain the central focus? (nice panel, btw)

The colors are a great match for the panel, but I think they overpower the panel. I see the bargello 1st, not the panel.

Beautiful colors, I like the bargello pointing down, I notice the panel more. Pointing up, it lifts the eye up and you miss the panel. I agree that the bargello would make a nice backing.

I wouldn't use the bargello directly against the panel. I'd border the panel in a solid color and then use the bargello - I think the separation would bring out both and show why they complement each other. JMHO.

And the bargello is beautiful btw.

My eyes would have trouble deciding where to look, but that's just me.

That's what I was thinking. Instead of cutting the fabrics though, you could just lay the black down and lay the panel on top. Then fold the bargello in half and lay it on the black about 6 or so inches over. Even if that is not the pattern you want for the thinner bargello, it would at least give you an idea of what it will look like.

You may also want to audition some of the other lighter colors as a border between the panel and bargello.

I love the colors you chose for the bargello to match the panel. This will be a beautiful quilt when done.

    absolutely not!
the blue is your zinger fabric, and did you notice that depending on where it falls next to the panel - - the time of day seems to change? How fun is that??? LOL
You are just too clever! <wave>
