That is beautiful, I also hand quilt and so understand the work and hours that you put in that treasure. Your brother is very lucky to have a sis like you. It is stunning.

    Pam,
yes, I mark my own quilt tops. The preprinted ones are great and have beautiful designs but I love to find the fabric I want and it's a challenge for me to do the designs. I also use the readycut stencils very often - the complete ones or just parts of it. When I see a quilting pattern in a book on a picture I try to draw my own. I have many books about the British Quilting history with pictures of wholeclohts form North England and Wales made in the 17th to the 20th century and the quilters used wonderful patterns there. I draw them and make my own templates out of cardbord. Small patterns like spirals, leaves etc I draw freehand or quilt freehand without any markings. The quilting you see on my avatar is done freehand.

I started quilting about 20 years ago and specialized in wholecloths in 1995.

Well, as far as I know there are only a few in the world who do these quilts by hand and do not use the preprinted ones - in Germany I seem to be the only one specialized on wholecloth quilting. I do love patchwork and appliqué - but I don't want to do ist. Handquilting is my passion and I think my talent. Fortunately handquilting is still alive and there are still very talented quilters - but actually what quilters do today the quilting seems to be the least important. With todays materials dense quilting, especially handquilting, is not longer necessary and quilters can pay more attention to intricate patchwork and appliqué.
I don't have anything against machine and longarm quilting, for sure! I'm full of respect and admiration for quilters who handle theses techniques and do wonderful work. But I hope all theses methods in quiltmaking stand side by side and keep on going in an equal value.

Well, I'm not sure - but I think about half a year. Fulltime quilting.
