    I took a tailoring class in the 60's. We used silk thread that came on a spool that size for top stitching on wool. Sewed our garments with a thinner silk thread. I think it would be too heavy for needle turn.

    It is wonderful when folks PIF with such treasures.

    I made Christmas garland with old spools of thread and red plaid ribbons and a chunk of jute, looks really great, and reminds my Hubby what I want for Chistmas...anything to do with sewing!

    Cool! I have a large collection of wooden spools--mostly larger than these. Some with thread and many without!

    Silk is great for applique work, use it for most of mine.

    For those who actually use silk thread (of unknown age) how does one know if it has structural intergrity? Just test it?
    Or, is there a secret some of us don't know?

    that is button hole twist....handmade button holes were made with this, look was like embrodery

    also used for "hand picking" which is an edge hand stitch on designer 'one - of - a - kind' clothing

    Do any of them have labels on the end of spool? That could be a source to find info on how old they are.
