For light colored fabrics I use the method of needlemarking with a darning needle. You can see it here:

For darker fabrics I prefer watercolor pencils in a matching color.

I bought the fabric many years ago, unfortunately I don't know the color, but it's a solid fabric made by P&B (Color Spectrum). These fabrics are not longer available here in Germany and this fact really makes me sad! For me they are perfect for wholecloth quilts!
