Several times I've wanted to add a photo or drawing to a quick reply response and it won't let me. Is there a special trick to it that this befuddled woman doesn't know about?

Yes. After you write your reply in the 'Quick Reply' window, click 'Go Advanced' instead of 'Post Quick Reply'. It will then let you add photos just as if it was a New Post.
