I keep using the wrong term. I mean scallops.

I just cleaned up my piecing area and have been working on piecing Clue #4. I'm wondering if I should trim my rectangles before putting them together or if I should just go ahead and put them together and then trim the squares. Any suggestions?

I find things always fit better if they are the right size before so sewing, so I'd trim, join, then trim again if necessary.

I agree. It's pretty important that they are trimmed at each step. (as tedious as that can be at times)

nothing is as tedious as unsewing and removing all the tiny threads........be sure both pieces/patches are the correct size before sewing together. IMHO (in my honest opinion)

I think I recall some people saying it seemed to work better to just trim the completed unit. That's what I did.

I found this bit (post #974) referring to trimming the finished unit rather than each component.

That said, mine are not perfect, I gave myself permission to be off a smidge. It is ok, I want to be finished, not perfect.

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll have to figure out what will work best. I'm pretty sure I don't have any undersized rectangles as I've been randomly measuring as I do them. I guess I'll just have to try it both ways. This is such a tedious step as it is and I'm not even doing a full size quilt. I'm about 75% of the way to having all of my rectangles done. I can't WAIT till this step is done! LOL

Have you tried the seam ripper that has a rubber grip on the end? It works really well for the tiny threads. You just brush them away.

Yes, it was tedious. Finishing clue #4 very late at night I think was the one time I felt grumpy during the mystery (but I think that's mostly because I'd tried so hard and they were still wonky).
