I really like your idea and was thinking that if you do FMQ on it you could use the darker threads to got the details you want with out adding more block colors. Also someone mentioned the butterflies, that idea would be great do in the FMQ as well so you still keep the quilt like you wanted to, without the added blocks.
Just an idea!

His name on there would be a great idea!
Start watching on the web, in books, etc. and see if there's anything else that seems to fit. The butterflies already mentioned, the daisy ... and of course, he has "friends"!!!
If you want larger squares .... the grid is 1", so you could use 2x2 squares on the grid, for 2" fabric squares that would finish as 1-1/2" ... not all that big. One inch squares are going to be pretty tiny as they'll finish at 1/2"!! Really depends on how big your grid is and how big you want Dopey to become!
And too, keep in mind, you really don't need to use the fusible. I did this one just by putting it all up on my design wall, then stitched ...

This way, you could actually use non 1" increments if you wanted ... eg. 2-1/2" unfinished.
SeaSaw ... Welcome to the thread! Great idea to FMQ butterflies and/or perhaps the daisies that W4Me suggested. I think BrookMarie, was thinking of the extra blocks, as that was the intent of this challenge, to start with a central character and build a design of other features around it (i.e. taking it a step beyond borders). Hope you have your thinking cap on and will soon share with us, your plans for a project for this challenge!

Toby is a little old man dog. He loves to sit on the sofa and watch tv. He loves doggie bones and he loves his family. I was fortunate to get to babysit him while his mama went on a cruise. He adapted very well to my home and husband and was a total joy every time we kept him. He comes from my memory and I am very excited to make a quilt from my memories of him.

Glad we keep you coming back QuilterMomma and looking forward to your ideas when you have time to join us. We will be here for a long time.
Franky is designed as a block of the month so isn't supposed to be finished until September of 2013. He is currently on hold due to some custom etched glass orders that have come in. But, he stares at me from my design wall every time I go into the sewing/computer room so I know he will not be forgotten.
I, too, am enjoying the variety here.
