Morganfam7, Whoaaa! With a 5" square, your quilt will be huge! Love that photoshopping. :-) I'm not good with math either.

Morganfam7, I love how your Giant Swoon is coming. I'm not very good at math either. I do know, the rule is that you have to add 7/8 if your going to cut your squares into triangles. So, 5 7/8" squares pieced into HST's should finish to 5". Is there someone on her who can confirm this or offer better advice.

    Default Twin size, I hope

Actually, that picture would be the whole thing. I'm just doing the center part of Swoon only, then adding that darker border. It should be 72x72 or 72x81 if I do some narrow sashing at the bottom and add more black squares. ha - if I added right (but we see where my geometry skills have led me so far.)

I think I have to get batik cut yardage in brown to make the HSTs since I can't come up with a way i think I'll like to piece a bigger scrappy square to use. This is what happens when you're a newbie and don't stick with the written program.

Ok, so the lesson I've learned is that squares for HST have to be bigger, and that means that I can't use precut squares for any patterns that mix HST and squares without cutting down the squares.

The HST don't have to use bigger squares, just stitch on the center line instead of both sides of it. You'll only get one HST instead of two - and have the smaller triangles to save for something else. Your pattern isn't using that many of them, so if you already have a lot of precut 5" squares, I'd use them anyway.

I'll do that, then. Maybe quilting will help me get some geometry skills. lol I found some more brown batik, but haven't found grey batik I like. Thanks again! Marcy

Morganfam7, There are tons of batiks at my local quilt store. If you don't find something you like, I could send you a picture of what might be there, if you'd want to buy it by mail.

    Default What a sweet offer!

Thank you Givio! I have some great quilt shops that I can visit, but dh has asked me to not spend any more on fabric right now. Kids uniforms, curriculum, college books, and school supplies are driving us to the poor house I think I have enough grey that I can get going whenever I find the time to sew. Hopefully soon. Thanks again for your kind offer! Marcy
