Is anyone else cutting 3" instead of 2 7/8" and then going to trim? I know that if I do 2 7/8 I'll end up short. I always do.
Maybe I should wait until the Christmas clue comes out to cut?
    Anyone doing that?

I'm no expert but maybe you could use your fabric D for fabric C? The instructions did say to use multicolored for the 1st 3 fabrics and fabric C to be a complementary to A and I think your fabric D fits all those criteria. Just a thought.

Thanks everyone for your comments about my fabrics!

vadalia, my head is spinning reading your comments. Lol. once I read it several times it jelled in my pea brain. 😁. I get what you're saying about the yellow. Good point. If I had decided on the other fabric C I would have tried to find a lighter yellow. Thanks!

Without question, I always cut bigger to trim, Watson. I have learned the extra time is better then the frustration...at least for me it is,

I cut mine all as directed. I don't see any problem with cutting 3" and trimming... but you don't know how they will end up being used. So if you do that, I would mark them as being 3" but supposed to be 2 7/8", just so you remember what you did.

LOL, what kind of measurement is 7/8", anyway? Just make it 1 already!

Watson- Yes, I definitely will be cutting at least 3" instead of 2 7/8". I need the extra on HSTs. I've never made HSTs by cutting the square before sewing. I use 2 squares, draw a line and sew on either side, then cut. I understand why that won't work, but it will be a new experience for me.

I've always preferred to cut what I needed and don't mind 7/8" measurements at all. I like to just cut and sew. I'm not keen on cutting wrong sized pieces then having to do an extra step of trimming, so I welcome instructions that don't do it that way.

I particularly dislike sewing squares over corners, then cutting off half of the square leaving leftover little triangles. I'd rather have yardage than what they call 'bonus triangles.' To each their own. :-)

I think the drawn lines will be cut lines. So, I'm not going to draw, I'll eliminate that step and just cut the triangles. I hope that won't mess up her pattern, must wait to see.

I'm waiting until Christmas to cut my Fabric A, since it seems most likely that if we're going to cut any more fabric, it'll be from that one. Everything else I cut already because if there's any sewing going to be done from the Step 2 (which I assume there probably is?), I don't want to get behind!

So sorry! At least I warned you ahead of time my squirrel brain musings weren't going to be of any help I think I was basically trying to say "If you decide to go with Fabric D #1, I like the fabric choices in Picture #2. If you decide to go with Fabric D #2, I like the fabric choices in Picture #1. But overall I think Fabric D #2 works better." Which might be the kind of thought processes that explain why I went through 13 million fabric combo choices before pinning down my final selection ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ lol

yes, me too. I would rather trim HSTs than trust myself to be that accurate.

it's not a bad idea to wait to cut fabric A. On the Merry Mayhem website she has some general tips that I hadn't read before yesterday. The first one stated, "The larger the yardages are in the Supply List, the more of that fabric you will be seeing in the completed project." This makes obvious sense but part of the mystery to not give all the cutting instructions at once I guess. This is my first mystery quilt so I'm learning.

Vadalia, no need to apologize! Your thoughts well stated. It just takes me longer to compute things than it used to. 😁
