I've been posting pix over in the Mission Organization thread. Still so much to do, still so much fabric. After moving these boxes of fabric here and there so I could work around them, I'm currently I'm thinking that my goal is to get all my fabric into the closet and that maybe I am close but it won't yet fit! I do know that I have several groups of fabric that I have determined are about ready to go, but even if that is two boxes, I need to use/let go ore than that!

It's a process that begins by limiting what comes in... I'm doing really good on not buying new fabric except for immediate use and generally I'm doing ok with the thrift store buys. The auction stuff is rare, but I have a lot to get through.

With all this new stuff coming in in addition to what I'm eyeballing as going out, I am actively watching for people in my local Craig's List, Next Door, etc. There will be a "sewing and crafts things wanted" and I will be able to pass on quite a bit of stuff.,, the only caveat will be they must be willing to take lots of stuff :p

Ckcowle- I feel your pain. OTOH- the blocks you made look great- can you modify the design to use the sizes that they ended up being?

I got my Debby Brown July top pieced and am working on piecing the Star blocks for the August top…. Am flying through the 2.5” square scraps making these quilts and also managing to use stash for the sashing, borders and binding. I bought a wide back for the June quilt, and got it quilted and bound before my surgery. Just haven’t managed to photograph it yet. This week I was able to piece a back for the July quilt using stash and got it sandwiched, so it’s ready to be quilted when I feel up to doing a large quilt- maybe sometime toward the end of this week or early next. I haven’t decided on sashing or borders for the August quilt, but there’s likely something in stash that will work- fingers crossed.

Rob….so impressed that you are sticking with the Debbie Brown monthly challenges. You are powering thru your scraps…that must feel good.

I made this cute little quilt for an adorable 3 year old who loves flowers. I used the scraps from a wide backing I used on another quilt for the floral print and stash on hand. It’s 45”sq. I ripped out this pattern from a really old magazine in 2016 and thought I’d give it a try with this little quilt. I cut it out one evening, and sewed it together the next. I have some cartoon animal print fabric that I’m going to make another one. I think it’s the perfect pattern for large print..

ckcowl 08-01-2021 04:15 PM

That’s a cool remedy iceblossom. I’m going to use the strips and might change things up and try a few blocks following that tutorial. For my exchange blocks I need to cut new strips correctly and make the blocks- but that’s ok. I will enjoy playing with all my unexpected strips- see all the different blocks/ layouts I can come up with using them. I think I’ve been waiting for a situation to start me on a new adventure. Since I’ve had trouble wrapping my brain around some patterns/ plans I’ve found each strip block, or log cabin takes me 45 minutes to an hour and that seems to be working for me.

Iceblossom 08-03-2021 06:14 AM

Cranky Bernie (my machine) seems to be much happier with the reorganization I've been doing. I finally sat down to those HST yesterday and had a lovely time without thread errors and with great stitch quality :) Today is ironing, not so lovely but fast and easy enough.

Today being Tuesday group I have boxes of stuff from the Auction pick up for the ladies to go through. I don't think they are going to take much... but you never know. I'll be pinning the 2-fer HST units to the center Squares while they go through the boxes. I didn't keep much for myself, but all in all, it's pretty good just not quilting.

If you somehow missed my auction/hand crank -- here's the at home shots!

Teen -- I keep meaning to say that quilt of yours has been working on my brain. I really like the potential of it and that it isn't regular old straight up and down... but it is!

As we know, I'm always looking for something to do with a yard or two of large novelty prints... I have a couple that just scream this top! (particularly lavender with silly animals and polka dots...)

rryder 08-03-2021 02:45 PM

Teen- that is one cool quilt! I love that it's so geometric, but not straight up and down and those fabrics work great with it.

I got my August color block quilt top finished, I need to see if there's something in my stash that can be used for backing, otherwise I may need to use my Birthday exemption to purchase some fabric https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png. July color block is sandwiched and ready to quilt whenever I feel up for it. And- I posted a pic of the June color block in the pics section- go take a look when y'all get a chance. I ended up buying a wide back for it, but the rest is from scraps and stash.

Thanks everyone!

Ice…very cool pattern for novelty prints. I have my next baby quilt kitted up for this pattern and will share soon. Comes together really quickly, too…double bonus.

Good lord, Rob…August done already! You go, guy!!

I’m trying to use up some scraps from my pumpkin quilt…I love those fabrics. Today, I made a 6” block for my little stand and I’m thinking of making one for my sister…I gifted her with the stand and her first 6” block on my last trip so now I need to make a variety for seasons etc so she can change them out, BTW..this is a great Christmas gift idea.. Is this stinkin’ cute or what? Lol..

Blue Bell 08-03-2021 07:03 PM

Cut pumpkin quilt, Teen. Your sister will love it.

Blue Bell 08-04-2021 06:04 AM

CUTE------ No need to make a huge quilt when a little one can put a smile on someone's face.

Julienm1 08-04-2021 06:25 AM

I have been very very bad. Fell off this wagon and hurt my ankle. Since I couldn't run to jump back on, I went shopping. No yardage but a few jelly rolls and layer cakes. I will not define "few".https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/rolleyes.png And then joined a new to me quilt group and they have a WONDRFUL free table to shop...and I did. I brought a wheeled suitcase full of patterns, rulers, notions to get rid of and then... OMG...filled that sucker up with free fabric. All of it usable...of course. Now tomorrow going to a diff quilt group with that same suitcase filled with fabric. These women are like sharks with chumb...lol. Since I can't stay for the meeting I feel confident I will not bring anything home. (Cross my fingers)

Iceblossom 08-05-2021 07:19 AM

Rargle Snargle! Just when everything was going so well, on Tuesday Cranky Bernie just refused to work. I went in for a quick half hour of sewing and after a couple hours of frustrating error codes, packed it up and took it to the shop yesterday. If it isn't the thread sensor (already replaced about a year ago), it's a very similar issue. Estimated 6 week turnaround.

But that's ok -- it's not like I don't have back up machines. While I was going to start quilting down Aunt Debbie's top, I can't do that right now but with an end of the year deadline, I can float 6 weeks. And if it is going to be more than that, well, not ideal but Remy (my vintage Remington) actually does rather nice quilting for a standard neck machine.

Today is the day hubby and I are taking the Hmong Story Cloth to the Wing Luke museum. Museums typically have thousands of pieces in collections that may never be displayed, that's ok, it's better storage than in my fabric.

One of the Tuesday ladies took more of the craft things than I expected -- among other things for her own use, she is willing to take group ownership of the huge amount of official Velcro that was in one box. Still have a couple boxes left.

I am staying clear of fabric temptations as I continue to organize, the last thing I want to do right now is bring anything new in the house. I need to get Froggie Beach done so the loose pieces aren't floating around, but maybe some semi-forced organizational time isn't such a bad thing. Maybe.

Julienm1 08-05-2021 09:44 AM

Just got back from the quilt group. DH helped me wheel in the suitcase...I carried the tote. Put the suitcase on the stage and the quilters couldn't wait to start fondling!!! I used small baggies for smaller pieces. Not sure how much was left cuz I had an appointment but wished I could have stayed to watch the "feeding frenzy!" Repeat the process a week from Sat with dif quilt group. Bit by bit my undesirables are leaving. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

I also made sure that I actually took pictures of my July finishes-2 flimsies and 1 Quillow. The two flimsies also count for the UFO challenge because they are all from stash material and have been cut and pre-positioned for over two years and the quillow for over a year.

The first flimsie is all child prints and lap quilt size.

The second is a miscellaneous assortment of scrap blocks I have had that were left over from other quilt tops over the years. I did the-toss it in a bag and sew it as it comes out attempt. Surprisingly enough, no prints are sitting right next to itself.

The last three pics are of the quillow for a coworkers daughter. He left our organization and came back. Before leaving he married a nice woman with 3 kids. For the wedding gifts, they got afghans and the kids all got quillows so they would not be left out. They also had a baby before he left. I finished the top before but did not finish it. We have the front, back and it folded.

I finally have pictures of one of my May finishes, the Big Boy Quilt. It has hand embroidered hot rod cars and the top is all from stash https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png . I did buy some blue shark fabric for the backing, but it just wouldn't due with what I had on hand.

Snooze2978 08-06-2021 04:58 AM

I'm happy to say I've been on a fabric moratorium since Nove 2018. So far I've only had to buy 3 fat quarters to finish a quilt after the gal said she wanted it queen size instead of full size. Had almost enough to finish the border and binding but needed just these 3 fat quarters. The bad news is she died from pancreatic cancer before I could give it to her. It was a gift to her. When she went into the nursing home I decided to try to whip up a lap quilt using the same fabrics as I had enough scraps excluding the border but she died within a week of going into the nursing home. Now looking for someone else to give the quilt to once I get it quilted.

On the happy note, I haven't purchased fabric, thread or batting since that time. Too many UFOs in the main stream to finish up.

since my TBI happened on October 1, 2019 and I had been pretty isolated, only leaving the house for therapy and neurologist appointments- when the lockdown started in March I thought “ we’ll this isn’t going to effect me- I’ve been isolated for 6 months already “ but you know what? It was different, and it did effect me. Suddenly I couldn’t even go to therapy or appointments- everything was on line. I think it was April, maybe May when my husband asked me what was loaded up on the Longarm. I’m sure I looked at him like he had lost his mind. Nothing! I hadn’t even opened the door to my studio in 7 or 8 months- I had lost the ability to write my name- I couldn’t even think about trying to sew. He said- “ I’m worried about your well being- I want you to go in and load up some practice thing and quilt it. “
I sat around for 2 or 3 more days- thinking about that- then finally got brave enough to go in and load something up, wound bobbins, threaded, everything ready and walked away again. I think it took another week for me to finally go in and start sewing. I grabbed those handlebars, one line across the top then started to write! I couldn’t write At All with a pencil- but with the machine my penmanship was Beautiful! I wrote and wrote and wrote all over that practice quilt.I think that was a major turning point for my recovery, my life was not over- I could still quilt. Even though that was 14 months ago I’m still not productive like I was before the injury. I can sew for about an hour sometimes 2 on blocks/ projects. I can only quilt for 45 minutes to an hour before a headache starts or things start going wonky. And I don’t have a lot of motivation. I have been back to work full time for 8 months now and the people I work with have been wonderful- looking out for me and seeing progress. I want to get more done in the sewing room- I want to get that stack of quilts quilted that Ben made, I want to be creative- but something has changed. I’ve changed. I’ve thought seriously that I need to really get in gear and get the ufos finished up then sell the machine and move on- but then I wonder- would I be ok? I don’t know why this is where my mind goes… guess time will tell. I’m tired of funerals- I’m tired of angry people, I’m just plain tired and I know I’m not alone. We all hate change and when it’s so drastic and sudden….oh well- ( spilling my guts- again, is over) I don’t know why I’ve had this need to ( share) so much lately…just another phase on my journey I guess…
thanks for being here. 🤗

what great insight your hubby had. The large motor skill of the " quilted word" was just the ticket you needed. BTW I love to write on quilts too.

I have been AWOL. After2+ weeks of Family in and out I am hoping to get back to doing what I love. In the meantime I did buy some un necessary fabric..mea culpa ! And to compensate I have started the OMG quilt. From scraps I have the HST'S and squares cut out. I am getting the 4p and 9p made. Finally just had to start on the blocksand have 5 of each style done. According to my calculations I will have 7 yards of fabric just in the 9p and 49 made from 1inch widths. That's a lotta scrap! Is it making adent? Maybe!

I was able to get another two flimsies done this past weekend (even around a crochet lesson). Both of these have been staged for over two years. The first one just 5-1/2 inch squares with sashing. The second is a "Zero Waste" Quilt from the YouTube channel. Having a senior moment on the young ladies name. Of course, I couldn't leave the pattern as is. I added sashing which changed the borders, but I did get it up to twin-sized. Now I know what to do with the second one that is waiting to be sewn. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

These two are packaged and waiting for my Labor Day trip to get dropped off. I am definitely going to work on something simple next.

retiredteacher09 08-09-2021 04:53 PM

Motorcyclemad: Very pretty flimsies. Congratulations on getting them finished.

oksewglad: Love that your family could get together.

What a good way to clear some of your stash! I gave away a bin full of fabric during COVID. Donated to some fashion design students who were making masks for all sorts of community agencies and organizations when the mask mandate first was in place. It felt so good to free myself from what I would not ever use. You must be flying high. Roll'in, roll'in, roll'in, keep that suitcase roll'in!

Iceblossom 08-10-2021 06:52 AM

Always glad to see the returnees and see the updates!

Wowza, Motor Madeline -- look at you go. One of my good friends is a major fan of the quillow, that's how she does most of her projects.

I wish I could report further progress in organization and fabric usage, but the hubby had an unexpected day off, he had been scheduled to work 10-12 hour days for about 10 days in a row, but on Saturday his shift for Sunday was cancelled so we took advantage of a date day and got nothing but together time accomplished. A very great accomplishment :) And then yesterday I did a very good imitation of a sloth.

Today is my Tuesday group. I'm going to start pinning frog and alternate blocks together. We are expecting medical news, good or bad, from one of the group today and are expecting everyone to be there.

Irishrose2 08-15-2021 04:21 PM

I never realized how often I sew a few seams at a time until I couldn't. I just went almost four days with power. We were projected for six days, so it's good that it is back on. Okay, I can't sew - I'll get some fabric cut - no, it's not pressed.
The worst was that I had company and couldn't cook for them. But it's all minor when you consider what the people in fire or flood areas are going through.
I am thankful for Consumers Energy people and their hard work. We have workers from seven states here.

My household reorganization continues, last week I won a bid I didn't expect to win and we picked up a 400 CD (yes... 400) changer on Sunday. It is so big it has to go where the old "fat screen tv" used to be. It works but was missing the remote and that's sort of crucial, I've found a local one I can pick up today.

And that was out past the big Goodwill in downtown Seattle so we stopped by and found a number of things, including a couple pieces of my Pfaltzgraff dishes I didn't have. I know they released stuff every year for the past half century at least but I'm always surprised when I find something I didn't have.

Considering the temptations, I did pretty good fabric-wise while thrifting this weekend with the hubby. Current Goodwill "full price" is $2/yard, so I got 4 yards (big enough for a back!) of a rather strange large scale Moda. If it doesn't come out in the picture, the background is mostly pink with a subtle light stripe I think the other floral has all sorts of possibilities...

Iceblossom 08-16-2021 08:25 AM

Looks like I missed posting before, I wanted to commiserate with you a bit IrishRose :) It's like the song, you never know what you've got 'til its gone. Or just when we are told we can't. In so many ways, my life post-Covid isn't very much different at all than it was before -- but it sure feels different. I have to be prepared for power outages and such and my fabric and such usually isn't one of those things. I do have a knitting tote, I'm not very good but trying to relearn "blind" with my vision issues so theoretically (and this dog blanket especially) I can even do it in the dark.

One thing I have found out is that computer solitaire has spoiled me for the real thing. Goodness! All the shuffling and re-dealing and such in real life.

But, things are getting back in many ways. So glad you are safe and dry and have power. Likewise over here.

Rff1010 08-16-2021 06:56 PM

Well I just spent a few hours today folding and shoehorn-ing new acquisitions into storage. And.... I'm back on the wagon. Outta space, plenty of PIGS (projects in bags). Just need to do the work.

Good news is I took machine in for service while I was on vacation so everything is oiled and running smoothly.

rryder 08-17-2021 04:42 AM

Oh dear, I fell off the wagon. Last Wednesday I went into the quilt store to buy a wide back for my August color block quilt and some fabric to back my doodle quilt. I came out with: 1. a wide back for the August quilt. 2. a dyeable wide back that I can dye paint to match my doodle quilt. 3. a bunch of blenders from the remnant bin (haven’t counted up the yardage yet). 4. had signed up for a class that was on Saturday. 5. bought the pattern and 6. the two rulers needed for the class and went home.

Took the class on Saturday and used up 20 fat quarters from stash as well as 3 yards of WOW. Still need to put all the blocks together and add sashing and borders. It was a lot of fun and I’m thinking that I may have used up enough stash to offset the blenders I bought….

Rob

Iceblossom 08-17-2021 08:26 AM

OK, Rob you reassured me you are taking good care of yourself physically. Doesn't sound like you just completely broke and went hog wild in the shop, so guess we can say -- we want pix of the class project!

The CD changer looks like it needs a shop visit, even with the remote I wasn't able to get it working correctly. I think the basic bench fee is about $100, it will still be worth parts up to another 100, but after that it gets in the good money after bad sort of thing. I'm hoping it will be like a $7 part with the $100 of labor and I'd be very happy.

Last week the Tuesday group met outside and it was not conducive to working, so I have the combinations of frogs to star blocks to pin together. In very good news, the health concerns came back as negative which was the wonderful answer.

Tomorrow I think I will be continuing to help my friend organize her stash and projects, will find out today at group. We've made wonderful progress, but still haven't found the two specific projects I'm looking for, so I can make blocks for them instead of starting another one of my own projects. Downstairs is looking good now, but tomorrow we begin upstairs. She has really nice things and they have been well taken care of, this isn't a hoarder just a stash that exploded. LOL, I can tell the difference :p

Seriously down sizing. Kitting fabrics and donating the kits. We're moving and I'm cleaning out. So far have 1 quilt that needs binding and 5 kits ready to move out. I've spent yrs trying to down size and now it's full out mode.

petthefabric: Way to go with kitting up fabric and donating it. Will you be moving far?

I remembered to snap a picture of my Growing Up Odd quilt top. It was sandwiched by the church group and was in line to be tied in this picture.

Looked at the last tub of fabric. All floral. Forgot it was hiding and then found ANOTHER tub. 2nd tub can wait. Went thru the floral and OMG where did these come from. All kinda muddy. So gonna drag a tote to the meeting on Thurs and leave RIGHT AWAY to avoid temptation.

For the past week have not bought anything. Thank heavens what was on sale on my fab sites I didn't like. PHEW!!!...lol But tomorrow is another day. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

Iceblossom 08-17-2021 03:45 PM

Am enjoying the reports! Keep at it all.

Initial consultation with the stereo guy is basically what I thought -- he won't know until he gets into it if anything else is wrong, but yeah, we looking about about $100 -- 80 labor/20 parts. One of the ladies at group said "400 CDs?? isn't that a bit overkill??" but I think I have about 500 of my own and the hubby has another 100 not in my collection... I'll get to play a very real game of top 100 albums when setting up the player even if I can't go all the way to 500.

All I can say is I was a lot stronger 20 years ago when I moved the television in... don't think I could get it out of the house on my own, all I could do to get it out of the entertainment center. That CD player is bulky but not too heavy empty. It will be a force to be reckoned with when full. Maybe even enough to seriously look at other furniture options now.

I got my frog+star blocks pinned today at group, but am going to help friend again tomorrow -- then that's all for this week so maybe a little more time for me and my fabric.

We're moving across the country; California to Florida.

Today the comfort quilt leader took over 30 quilts in different levels of finished; needs label, needs binding, needs quilting, needs piecing. We averaged 6 yd/quilt so over 180 yds. She's doing some counting on them so I'll have a better idea.
There are emply spots in the room now.

Next week we're going to do a work day to make pillow case kits.

May the downsizing continue.
