How is the theme determined? I thought our hostess would set the theme or 2?

June: Independence

Here's my idea to show my three children, striving for independence. Birthstone colors. We live by the 96th Street subway stop. My color is light green.
Green should be bolder.
Very pretty Dotty!
dotty- i love your idea! independence for our kids is so difficult. i pressured my first born to leave the nest and i'm very sure it was harder on me than him. i still feel bad about it. but he is grown up, has a good job, a loving wife, and a gorgeous little daughter. everything i could want for him. i still miss the young version of my children, being able to hold them on my lap, and kiss their heads, soothe their worries away. now i can't reach the boys' heads, but at least my daughter is my height! all three live away- 2 in texas, one in ny. i hate growing up!
Love it Dot
Dotty, like your idea and how you're planning to put it all together.
I agree Dot, darker, maybe just two shades of the green, you need more of a foundation to hold up. You are the foundation for your children as they shine in life.
Yes! But I am doing birthstone colors & mine is the peridot, which is light green. Hmmm, let me google peridot!!
Aha, google says my peridot can be as deep as olive green. Off to my "greens"box!
you could go with a brighter green, not necessarily darker.
Agreed. Too sleepy to make decisions tonight. Just finished my monochromatic piece. It is so-o hot, but I have to go out. I am out of milk & I will really want some for my morning coffee. Before I move the car. Ah, NYC!
Mine is the Periodot as well. FUnny there ya think, how about the 23rd, is yours the same date? I know we are a bit different on the year. It will be pretty with the darker shade. I am the same on coffee, got to have my creamer in it.
This is hilarious! Art quilts and yentas. Years ago on the quilt.com bulletin board I found an obstetrician in Wichita KS for my DD who had just moved there. She delivered four of my grandkids, so it was a good match. Hope you have as good luck with your matchmaking. I'd love to try this challenge, but have several things going right now. Will watch it at a later time.
i figure coffee is the right color, i just need it sweeter. lol. my sister used to say that god made scotch the right strength, just couldn't keep it cold enough. so all she'd add was ice. have a good night, all. talk to you tomorrow!
hey, lynnvt, we'd be delighted to have you! come play with us when you can!
I'm the 19th! Will work on that one tomorrow!
Is anyone doing the Art Quilt Challenge?
Do you mean the 9 x 12" for Alzheimer's research? I am. I do roses in honor of a lovely lady named Rose.
Do we have a July Challenge theme yet?.........June got by me due to death in the family, but I'm rarin' to get involved in the next one..........Waiting and watching!
There were a lot of suggestions for July. Who will choose?
I guess the host needs a pm???????????????????????
i did a quilt for aaqi, but haven't heard from them yet. my mother died in december from alzheimer's. makes it kind of personal.
Yes, if we all made one little quilt, it would be awesome.
that would be a great secondary purpose of this group! anyone who wants to participate in the aaqi challenge needs to go to their website and read the rules. it would be terrific. we have the fun of seeing everyone's art work and then have the higher purpose of donating it! as you may have guessed, i'm all for it!
I don't know if this is really a group. I don't think the "challenges" thread creates much as much cohesion as a swap.
I used to do a lot of the swaps but am focusing more on my own work now. The aaqi gives more motivation. And I did meet a new buddy "stuck in Philly"!! |
i don't see why we can't be a group if we want to be! we could have a leader of the month, that way everyone gets to feel really involved and no one person is 'in charge'. how about instead of a theme, we concentrate on factions of art quilts, color, texture, painting, threadwork, any number of things.
i heard there's a train that goes from here to there and back again, so nyc isn't impossible to get to, and a person might could get unstuck, for a day!:) |
I love the idea of seeing everyone's art work each month.......whether it goes to aaqi or just for stretching our personal creativity and sharing with everyone. It all sounds good to me.
Can we have the July theme? It is too late for me to start something in June, and with the holiday coming and company, there just isn't time for me.
Also, I guess I didn't read about the start of this challenge really well. Are we supposed to do just a fabric collage design? To me, but that is just me, an art quilt would have things like people, houses, trees, flowers, etc. Is it just supposed to be a mixed media? Thanks so much for answering my question. |
Can anyone tell me where to find the rules, etc.? It sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't want to break any rules. Can you please post a link?

I love swaps too but I am in south america and to swap costs me $5 per block for postage back to the US and about the same for anyone stuck with me as a partner. :) |

These 'art' quilts can be about anything........ I think this is more about having all of us stay both within our comfort zones and yet also stretching just a bit beyond into new techniques, colors, ways of looking at a favorite subject, etc. The idea of a challenge was to give a few 'guidlines' to try and work within and then take your ideas of what you love and and expressing it in fabric. And anytime anyone would like to suggest ideas and themes I am all agog! I would love for this to be collaborative and helping us all to learn and grow a little. |
