I think that will work much better, now my concern is are the gold and brown really different enough? You might look at them together in a black & white photo. Or, one of my contrast tricks is to cut a tiny scrap (like an inch square) and lay it in the middle of the other fabric, if I can see it clearly that's good... if I have to look for it, not enough contrast. There are other "from 6 feet away" variations.

And it is after last year and the hand dyes that makes me seriously consider doing the one fabric each option this year instead of the scrappy! LOL it was the quilting equivalent of the stories that start/end with "it seemed like a good idea at the time".

Belfrybat....I like your fabric choices. At first I thought the orange and red was not enough contrast but you said red is brighter than picture so it should work great.. and your green choice is going to be awesome with all the green shades. You’ll get the a great green spectrum of color with that fabric. Very cool..

Belfry, I agree that the second orange fabric will serve better. I also agree with Iceblossom, that if your gray should come into contact with your gold, there could be a contrast issue.

On colors being next to each other, Bonnie only mentioned the gold and orange. She made a point of saying that every color (which I took to include the gray) should contrast well with the neutral, but she didn't mention that every color should contrast well with the gray (on the other hand, with all that gray in the quilt, who knows? Maybe everything will be in contact with it).

I usually need advice on my color choices.....a friend would like a quilt with her favorite colors of pastel teals, pinks, mint green and yellow. Do you think any of these fabrics would work OK with Bonnie's directions. I have not shown my grays and will most likely need to buy most of that. I realize the darker pinks on the left will probably be eliminated, but not sure about the printed pinks if the prints are too large.

Carol, I think you have the start of something really nice and the soft shades will be lovely.

The only thing I can really say is you have to be able to instantly recognize any color as what it is to you, and what it is to Bonnie. I wrote notes and things on my paint chips last time, as well as kept notes in my notebook in addition to the website directions. For me it was mostly: Neutral = Yellow.

It is entirely up to you on the scale of the prints. The problem I had with the larger color shifts/prints in my fabrics was when I had fabrics that were noticeably one color, except with some variation, and it was the variation that was in block when I really needed the color (previous example: when I really needed the fabric to read blue, I had the one tiny pink spot as most of my square). Or when I had to cut sets and the individual pieces didn't look like they belonged together, ranging from dark red to mostly white.

In your fabrics that isn't quite as much the issue, but I might be a bit concerned with whether (for instance) you had 3 squares together of the top center fabric with mostly background, and then the 4th one was solely the dark flower. Or that super cool print on the far right, that could be very white background or very dark colored depending in where you cut.

Carol, those colors look gorgeous together. Is the paisley part of the greens?

What I see when I look at Bonnie's paint chips is 5 colors of basically equal saturation with not much variation in value, and I think that also describes your group of fabrics, so I don't see why they wouldn't work as a soft and muted version of the quilt, as long as you keep your light neutrals very light; there is supposed to be good contrast between all of the colors and your neutral. Or, maybe, since your palette is light, go with a dark neutral?

What were you thinking to use as your red? I would call the red the dominant color in Bonnie's palette, as the brightest and darkest. When I cover up your darkest pink, it's the aquas that stand out as most vibrant to me, so maybe use aqua as your red and pink as your orange?

I'm just realizing that the fabrics are laid out on a white, which is probably your neutral.

Once again, I am a lurker and will be collecting clues. Maybe I'll start sewing, we'll see.

turquoise = red
mint green = parakeet
pink = gold
yellow = orange
That "super cool" print on the right is actually a mint green with pink and I'm not sure where it fits, but I love it and hope to use it as a green. There is enough of the larger prints that I could fussy cut them to obtain the most pink I think. I plan to go with lighter/medium grays rather than darker as Bonnie has shown in her introduction and most all of my neutrals are very light/white....actually they are boring compared to Bonnie's, but it is what I have on hand. Bonnie mentioned that they need to contrast with my yellow/pinks, but hopefully they will contrast enough with the gray if positioned together. This part if always a challenge for me so I appreciate everyone's input.
