I've been experimenting this afternoon, making some clue 3s in dark neutrals. I think it's having a different color sashing that allows the eye to see the alternate block. I wonder why the sashing being the same color makes it harder to see this.
I need to sew my geese together so I can start sewing some blocks!
Christine, your blocks are just beautiful!

Looking at my picture again, something seems unfinished. I think the person who sewed salmon to all the cat's cradle blocks has the right idea. I like it more with that piece. Harder to piece the borders, but I'm thinking it might be worth it.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Christine, your batik blocks are so gorgeous. You called yourself a newbie... are you a newbie to quilting? You're doing so well! Have you considered the weight of a quilt with that much 'drop' over the side of the bed? You may not be able to move under it or roll over in your sleep. Just a thought.
I quilt on a Juki too... 2010Q... and I would not want to shove that much quilt up under it. When my quilts get too big I go use a friend's longarm. But that's not too often.

Wow! Loving everyones blocks, layouts and alternate ideas...
Hope to get some of my units done to at least make a block this week!
Thanks to everyone for the tips, hints and the lovely pics!

Agree ... it finishes the secondary block. It might make the setting triangle (which is now two intersected triangles) a bit tricky to piece/match. Three pieces?

My quilt when using Bonnie’s sashing, just lacked something for me—more blue. So I changed up the sashing to a blue-brown-blue color scheme, with neutral cornerstones. Gave some serious thought to doubling up the sashing, but could not face another complete set of those parallelograms. Here’s what resulted so far. The parallelograms still may become a chevron border. And those brown squares really should continue into the setting triangles—if there is enough brown left.

Here's my first block! I still need to sew the geese together to have the units together to make the rest of the blocks, but I couldn't wait to see one block! I like it! My DH said: "Wow, what an intricate block!"

Nice Krisb and Kristijoy....
I just finished putting my top together. I will think on a border some, but I'm pretty sure I want it to be either all blue pieced, or blue and neutral pieced. This is the interior... 30 blocks, 71 sashing pieces and 42 cornerstones. And many, many scraps.
