Here in Alaska it is called Bear Camp Salad - hard to grow lettuce here - much easier to grow broccoli. My recipe uses Miracle Whip. Sunflower seeds are good in it too. Eat it fresh - not so good leftover.

We also make this salad. We use green onions, sunflower seeds and red grapes. Leave the grapes whole for less soggy salad.

Instead of 2 bunches of broccoli, I use some cauliflower, cheese, bacon, sunflower seeds, red onion and the dressing-I pour the dressing over the salad a few hours before serving-time to soak in-mmmm! I like the idea of the water chestnuts-will have to try that-love the crunchiness of water chestnuts-

    Default Broccoli Salad

I made this salad yesterday. I used sunflower seeds and shredded cheese in mine. Also, didn't use vinegar in the dressing. Just mayo and milk. (and it was lite mayo)

We like this recipe, too, however, I don't always use the onion, unless it's when Vidalias are in season. If you use onion, add it just before serving or it will overpower it. I often use Craisins instead of raisins and that's good. Pecans are okay, too. I have even added cauliflower.

Seems like everybody likes this recipe and makes their own variation. I either leave out the red onion or use a few thinly sliced pieces for decoration only, use black seedless grapes (cut in half) instead of raisins, pecan pieces instead of cashews or almonds and then use the real crumbled bacon from the salad aisle.

I, too, have been making this for years. I add slightly sauteed mushrooms and sliced black olives, no raisins. I also sprinkle grated parmesan or cheddar cheese. Yum!
