I've made trifles before but never with dried out cake. The cake tastes a bit granular after it is torn up, and I wonder if you just thought it was dried out.
As Tartan says, it can have almost anything you want in the layers. Whipped cream, puddings, fruits, crushed up cookies, nuts, coconut...your imagination is the limit. Technically, a layered banana pudding could be considered a trifle. Use any search engine and search for Chocolate trifle. You will be amazed at the recipes. The beauty of the trifle is putting it in a see through bowl so that all the layers are visible.

I have made the dessert with dried-out cake. It has been a life-saver when a quick dessert is needed. It is cool, quick, good, and anything else anyone can think of on a hot day!!
There is a recipe for this in a cookbook we got for a wedding present--"2nd Day Cake."

I have made a trifle with chocolate cake. It all depends on how rich you want to make it. Put cubes of chocolate cake in your bowl. I have topped it with hot fudge sauce, raspberries, whipped cream, then a layer with more cake, caramel sauce strawberries more whipped cream etc. use your imagination. I have also added chopped up candy bars or things like that.

A traditional Christmas dessert in our family is "Barbara Dessert", so-called because Barbara always asks me to bring it. Using a truffle bowl, layer brownies (or other cake), vanilla pudding, cool whip and chopped up Reese's peanut butter cups. Just don't overdo the Cool Whip. Top with the pb cups, it looks pretty. Then enjoy.
