I usually make use of my bread machine to mix my dough. Shape the pretzels, let them sit covered for 1/2 hour, cook in simmering water for 3 minutes, (1 1/2 minutes per side), then bake. Yummy!!!! So nice to have fresh, hot bagels with a bowl of soup or stew.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions about the pretzels. I bought frozen bread dough and let it thaw. I made small balls9about 24 from each loaf) and rolled them into ropes.
I boiled them for 2 min. and placed them on a cookie sheet. I brushed them with an egg wash and sprinkled salt on them I baked them for 15 min. at 400 degrees. I took them to our church's Ash Wednesday meal. The is a story that the 3 holes in the pretzel represented the Trinity. The pretzels were well received last evening . I had many favorable comments. Thanks, again, to all who offered ideas.

    Quick Cinnamon Sugar Pretzels--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ¾ cup raisins
3 ¾ cup all purpose flour
    ¼ cup brown sugar
    1 ½ tbsp baking powder
    ½ tsp baking
    ½ tsp salt
    2 cups low-fat plain yogurt
    1 egg
    ¼ cup granulated sugar
    1 tsp cinnamon
    2 tbsp butter

    How to make it
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Preheat the oven to 375F. Grease two large cookie sheets.
Measure the raisins into a bowl and pour boiling water over to cover. Let soak 30 minutes.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
In another bowl, whisk together the yogurt and the egg.
Pour the yogurt mixture into the flour mixture and stir well until everything is blended.
Drain the raisins and add to the dough, mixing well – the dough will be quite soft and sticky.
Sprinkle some additional flour onto work surface and turn the dough out.
Knead the dough about 5 minutes, and cut into 12 equal pieces.
Working with one lump of dough at a time, roll it out into an even rope about ½ inch thick. Twist it into a pretzel and place on the prepared cookie sheet. Repeat with the remaining lumps of dough.
Stir together the cinnamon and sugar and melt the butter in a small dish.

To finish should say brush the melted butter on and sprinkle sugar-cinnamon mixture, then bake about 10 minutes.

I read that pretzels were given a rewards for children learning their Bible passages and are in the shape of arms folded across your chest as in prayer.
