I use the Quaker recipe with Imperial margarine and the cookies were perfect for years and years...well now Imperial margarine is mostly water and I can't use it to bake with anymore. Now i use Crisco butter flavor and get great results.

Good tips on the shortening

These look scrumptious and I usually trust this blogger for her recipes.
http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/05/cr...olate-cookies/ And she has another recipe for chewy oatmeal raisin cookies that looks equally delicious :) http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/02/th...aisin-cookies/ |
Audrey! What a wonderful name. lol Thats my name as well. Named after my mamaLord. Except her name was Audra. But they call me Audey
I am going to try your recipe because I was thinking that we use to make them with shortening. My mother in-law taught me to bake using real butter and I have now 36yrs. |
Easy- both sound really good. I can see I am going to have to get my grandchildren here to help me bake. They actually love to bake cookies at Mimis. I can not wait.

Here is the recipe you're looking for
1 1/4 cups butter or margarine, softened
3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 bag semisweet chocolate chips 3 cups oats Cream together butter and sugars. Blend in egg and vanilla. Gradually add dry ingredients. Bake at 375 for 9-11 minutes. This is the choco-chip recipe from the Quaker tin. My mom made these and kept the tin because of this recipe. She has passed it down to me and this is the only recipe I use! |
I love the one on the inside of the top lid. It always turns out good. Quaker oats brand.

I have the recipe that my mom used to use from the box. It is
Oatmeal Cookies 3/4 cup vegetable shortening (butter flavored) 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 egg 1/4 cup water 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 cups Oats (Old Fashion), uncooked 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Beat together shortening, sugars, egg, water, and vanilla until creamy. Add combined remaining ingredients; mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake in preheated moderate oven (350 degrees) for 12 to 15 minutes. For a variety, add chopped nuts, raisins, chocolate chips. I always put in tons of raisins. Hope you enjoy!!!!! |
I think the other key in the cookies besides the Old Fashion Oatmeal is the shortening. Friends have tried using butter, etc and the cookies just did not turn out the same. |
