Yeast question
#1
I bake all our bread. I messed up big time by learning how to bake bread and now that's all my family wants. I use a bread machine to mix and knead the dough. I take it out and let it rise and bake in the oven. I like to bake in bowls to get the round loafs. One thing I have found is it is very hard to get the old fashioned yeast. All I can find is the instant or fast acting. None of it has the great yeast flavor that makes the homemade bread taste like the homemade bread I use to make. Does anyone know where I can buy the real cake yeast?

Here in the UK, we have a supermarket chain called Tesco.s that bakes its own bread on the premises and is only too happy to let anyone have some yeast, free of charge too, perhaps if you asked at one of your supermarkets
you maybe pleasantly surprised

Bella, usually you find the cake yeast in the dairy case, not with the regular yeast. I bake all our bread and noodles too, I dont use a bread maker though...although sometimes I partially knead it with my kitchen aide mixer. I buy the dry yeast in bulk and keep it in the freezer. It keeps for a year or more.

Try this recip[ie
Amish White Bread
1 pkg dry yeast
1/2 c warm water
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp salt
2 c warm water
2 1/2 Tblsp melted shortning or veg oil, Dissolve yeast in 12 c warm water
In large bowl combine sugar salt 2 cups warm water and shortning. Stir in yeast mixture. Gradually add flour to form a soft dough. (I use the mixer until I can't anymore) Mix together (with hands)
Place in greased bowl to rise 2 hours, Punch down, form into two loaves. Place in bread pan, let rise two hours. Bake at 350 or 25 to 35 min.

Up North,
Is that supose to be dissolve the yeast in 1/2 c warm water?
I would love to make some homemade bread. I'd like to try and make a whole wheat version. Anyone have a recipe?
Thanks,
Kathleen

Last time I found "real" yeast, it was in a farm store and came in a jar. One tablespoon was equal to a packet. You may want to call a health food store if your market doesn't carry it. I haven't made yeast bread in ages. Can you bottle that smell for me?
