My doctor years ago told me to "eat less, move more" and that is what works for me. I also don't keep a lot of junk in the house. I also have not eliminated anything from my diet, but am careful with quantity and frequency of some things. I know I am in trouble with bread, so don't keep it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I lost 20 lbs in 4 months with these changes: No cokes or other sodas. No candy, few desserts. No ice cream. 2 pieces of bread per day, no more. When you eat between meals, eat fruit or vegetables - including at the movies. Park at the back of the parking lot always. Walk more whenever you can. That was all = no diet per say, no books, etc. I quit because 20 was all I needed.

freshly cooked Irish oatmeal in the morning and the only other foods here are fruits, vegetables, nuts and berries. My downfall was breads and cheeses so do not buy them any more ...... seems to be working, good energy, focus on quilting not food.

Several years ago, I fell in the shower and messed up the ligaments in one of my knees, leaving me unable to walk very far or exercise much. As a result, I've gotten rather fluffy.
DH and I enjoy driving through a nearby park on weekend mornings (lots of deer), and one morning we saw two of the STRANGEST bicycles we'd ever seen. They had 3 wheels, and the riders were sitting down, reclined in a chair rather than being upright on a regular bike seat. Suddenly I realized I might could do that! I can't ride a regular bike, thanks to my unstable knee, but by golly, I might could ride one of those 3-wheeled bikes!
We hurried home and got online to see what those bikes were called. Aha! They're recumbent trikes! Where can we buy one, and how much are they? I was soooo excited!
... until I found out that a decent starter trike costs anywhere from $1,500 to $2,200. Instant bummer.
We got to poking around online, and found where a few people had built their own recumbent trike. DH is pretty handy. Maybe he could build one!
And he did exactly that! He finished it up about 3 weeks ago, and as soon as I started riding it, I also started counting calories. Between the trike riding and watching what I eat, I can tell I've already lost some. My legs have gotten quite a bit stronger, too! At first I could only go a couple of miles, but now I'm able to ride almost 9 miles in a day.
So basically my plan is to pedal my fanny off, and try to keep it under 1,800 calories a day. (I'd actually like it to be a little lower than that, but I get horribly irritable and headache-y if I feel like I'm "starving".)
Here's my trike. I'm so proud of it, and proud of DH for building it for me! He's building one for himself, too.

It's very frustrating when I go to a site like SparkPeople and read about all the things I should be doing to lose weight, and I am ALREADY doing them all. No sodas, candy, ice cream, junk foods, fried foods, don't eat out, eat very little meat, mostly whole grains, fruits, vegs, drink water with meals. I eat a good breakfast and lunch and very light supper around 4pm. No snacking at night, I am hungry when I go to bed. And yet it is a struggle to lose weight. I did lose 10 pounds from walking but have plateau'd.
I have the utmost sympathy for people who are struggling with their weight, it is HARD WORK.

I try to eat healthy 90% of the time and allow myself 10% to eat the things I love. Try cutting back on portion sizes, adding a few more healthy foods and get some more exercise (just move more - you don't need to join a gym). Make the changes slowly over time and you are more likely to stick with them. Most of all, be patient. The weight did not come on over night so it isn't going to leave over night. Good luck!!

I walk with my dog 2 miles each morning. Have stopped eating chocolate really love chocolate - except for very special occasion. I cut my portions in half and often don't eat at night....I really think about if I am hungry or just bored or just think it is time to eat. If I only eat when I am truly hungry, I eat a LOT less. It's amazing how often, your brain is just looking for something to keep the mouth busy! I lost 30 pounds in a month (granted it was a very stressful month and I really had no appetite) but I'm keeping it off and working on the next 30 pounds.

what works for me is the cabbage soup diet What hasn't worked was the Vegan diet my dr put me on.. I have also found if I allow myself 1 treat a week it gives me something to look forward to, and makes it a little easier to stick to my diet

I agree with Stitchnripper... eat less, move more. It's all about portion control and exercise. It's an eye opener when you actually measure your portions and see what the correct portion size should be. I also like Leslie Sansonne's Walk Away the Pounds and have had success with her DVDs. It's something you can do in your home at whatever time works for you. The DVDs range from 30-45 minutes. I've lost a lot of weight on WeightWatchers which basically is just eating healthy... a lot of fruits and veggies and lean meats.
