Can you define what you mean by "in four sections"? Do you mean 4 equal squares or four long pieces? It seems like the pattern you choose for the quilting would matter as well. Is it stippling or something more complex? You would want the quilting to look uniform. Let us know how you proceed.

If I am understanding the question - your method would work if you quilt section 2 after it has been joined to section 1. However, if the sections are joined after both have been quilted, then you need to hand sew the two backings together.
I highly recommend Marti Michell's book, Machine Quilting in Sections. I used several of her methods to quilt several big quilts in sections before purchasing a longarm.

I never saw this book before - Machine Quilting in Sections by Marti Michell. Now I am seeing it everywhere! Probably because I looked it up on the internet after it was mentioned.
I ordered one today. thanks for the tip! I usually do "quilt as you go", with sashing. I've been wanting to also try doing it in sections too, without the sashing. Always open for pointers. My 'puter is in a different room than my craft room, so it is nice to have a book handy and not have to try to print out pages upon pages, or run back and forth for step by step instructions.
