Take a look at this before you throw them out. I haven't tried this yet- gave my strips away for pet beds.
http://www.mypoppet.com.au she makes these cords and used them for rugs and other things.
Type "handmade fabric twine" into the search box on the top right.

The strips can also be crocheted into a rag rag.

Some people crochet rugs with them. They make beautiful homemade rugs!

Look up Latilla quilts from the southwest. You sew these on a muslin background.

I saw an apron made from selvage strips ... either on this Board or on Pinterest. Also, a few weeks or so ago on Quilting Arts, there was a lady that actually cut very narrow strips and other strips in varying sizes and sewed them together. Her work was very unique.

I make many log cabin quilts with those long strips. I have seen darling bags and things made from selvages.

Like others here I save strips I consider useable, ie. at least 3/4"-1" wide or more. My selvedge strips are all too small to be used for much of anything (typically less than 1/2" wide and only a few inches long) so they get tossed along with the trimmings from straightening the width edge of the fabric. If something has been cut really poorly and there's a section wide enough to use at one end I will probably keep that part.

Many people want your selvages. Save them.

The other long strips...it's your call.

I have a a bag of what I call "strips" (narrower than 1.5"). I am undecided if I like the look of most strip quilts enough to use them. I think I do...as I do like some of them--but do I want to spend my time making something like this? Good question. I think so...but in the meantime, I have 10+ other projects lined up. I live in a state of quandary about this.

I make pet beds, so NO scrap goes unused in my house. If I'm unable to sew it up into a block, then it goes into a bed. I have a teenage niece whose parents have long term health problems, so I sew for both she and her younger brother (mom's unable). Girl is into upcycling just as I am, so my sewing is keeping her in style at school (high school is so tough). Don't mind, because she is a 4.0 student. Same goes for her little brother, I work with him on all class projects (did it with my daughter when she was young too). So the answer is "YES" they can be used. All animal shelters need washable beds for homeless animals. Salve Edges can be used in making string blocks or bags. Good luck
