You know what a good quilting project is just to keep sharp and practice new ideas? Quilts for NICUs and children’s hospitals. They aren’t big...NICUs want them no bigger than 36x36. I switched to do doing that because I’ve made enough big quilts and we now live in a condo with less bedrooms. I love working with colorful panels and fabrics and it makes families and children very happy. Yours is lovely by the way!

It's an excellent first project! Come back to the board or quilting whenever you are ready.
There are CAD like programs specifically for quilting, many of us use Electric Quilt. Sometimes I can satisfy that day's desire to quilt by playing with the program instead, it makes it easy to determine finished sizes, pieces, easily switch colors or find out the many "what ifs" we are confronted with.
