I don't recall where I heard/learned of the following, but use the idea and it works also. Thread your needle with the thread first taken from the spool, cutting and knotting the tail (or end) cut from the spool. This has something to do with the twist of the thread when manufactured. I love to applique and use the Thread Heaven from time-to-time. The two together works wonderfully.

I agree with Suz. Here's how I explain it (a little wordy)--pull out about 18-20 inches and hold the thread at that point, cut off at an angle and thread that "just cut end" through the eye of needle. (This will be what was closest to the spool.) Pull that "just cut end" until it is the longest end and knot it. This keeps the twist of the thread going smoothly through the fabric and voila---no tangles. (At least, tangles are very rare!)
Also, as you sew, readjust the "tail" so it gradually gets shorter and this prevents thread breakage where the thread rubs on the eye of the needle. Logical, huh?

I've been using it and it's pretty good - I still get tangles but not NEARLY as much as I did without it. And a neat bonus; I noticed it's made not far from where I live!
I do have a question, though, for those of you who have used it for awhile....once it gets below the lip of the box, how on earth do you still run your thread through it?

I just started using this for embroidery and wonder why I waited so long to buy it! I also wonder how to use it once it's below the lip of the box. Right now I draw the thread through the Thread Heaven by putting a thumb on it. But when the Thread Heaven gets lower than the box lid????

LOVE Thread Heaven! Why on earth I bought those cute little round containers of beeswax (Singer?) the other day is beyond me; it crumbles and didn't work at all. Threw them aside and went back to Thread Heaven.

My thread does sometimes look like it's getting tangled, but I've yet to get an actual knot while stitching ... and that's saying something since I work with 36" of thread at a time (I know, I know. I should use half that amount). I definitely recommend trying these needles for anyone who does hand applique work!

I've done that for years and it works. I too use much longer than the recommended 18" cuts.
Too much start and stop that way.
