You did a beautiful job on your first quilt. That is one to be very proud of. You will find even after years of quilting you will see things you might have done different that is a part of the learning curve that just keeps helping us grow. I am 76 and have been quilting for many years but I am still learning. This board is one of the best places to learn new ways of doing things. Have fun with it.

You did a lovely job and you should keep this one. Make another for the recipient. When your first quilt is gone, its gone forever. Once you get going and make lots of quilts, you will look back on your first as a treasure. I've been quilting for about 15 years and still cherish my first quilt. Now that you've got the hang of it you will be able to make one for your friend in no time. Oh and a little hint about your potholders, use one layer of Insulbrite and just one layer of cotton batting and they will be easier to make and insulated well enough. I, too, used to use two layers of batting but read somewhere or watched a youtube video that said to use just one with Insulbrite. I tried it and have been doing that since.
