Running out of bobbin thread has happened to me too. Far too many times! So---I use a bobbin in the spindle on top of the machine as well as the bobbin within the machine. That way, when the bobbin on top is running out, I realize the bobbin in the machine is running out too and I fix it before it actually runs out. I think I read about doing this on this board actually! I wind a boatload of bobbins before I start my project, so I won't have to stop and wind during the project, especially since I'm using 2 bobbins as I sew along

Oh Yes, indeedy.... Sewed two sides of my quilt binding on without noticing. But that leads to the next question...when are the manufacturers going to make machines that hold the same amound of bobbin thread as top thread????? Where are the minds of the "men" who design these machines?

I have heard that instead of leaving your top thread on the spool, wind it onto another bobbin wih a little less thread on than the bobbin. Sew with that on the spool pin and you will run out of top thread sooner than the bobbin. However I prefer to just merrily sew along on my empty bobbin ! Diane C

I was speeding right along, doing the strips for the scrappy fence, and getting pretty comfortable with the 1/4" seams.... when I noticed that... the top thread seemed to be coming loose from the fabric....
So stopped sewing, pulled out the strip and lo and behold, the bobbin was empty... ok... not so bad you say.. at least I noticed it...
Well, that was after sewing 4 sets of strips without a bobbin thread (8.5" strips... 4 of them... chain piecing, so not having to lift the presser foot, or cut threads... but you would think I would have noticed! LOL)
AND... why is it that the seams seem to be so much straighter when I run out of bobbin thread...
I like stopping to fill a bobbin, gives me a chance to stretch out my back... need a better chair.
Just thought I would share my... oh my gosh... moment
we need an alarm for when the bobbin is getting close to empty hehe
