Grand Illusion - Bonnie Hunter's Mystery Quilt 2014

Tweety did you use the free Quilting and Whatnot? I looked at that one but went with another one I had used before when learning how to PP, which I had to adapt to size. I didn't like the way the Whatnot sewing lines just ended in nowhere and somehow it just didn't look to me like the dimensions were right - although I know other Board members have used it.
Truth to tell I THOUGHT I had adapted it to the correct size, and made up a 12-pack (1 8x10 sheet) of HST and discovered I had done my calculations wrong. I used the phrase 'finished size' to refer to the size of the HST, not to the size of the HST after it got sewn into a block. Oops! On the plus side, they were all oversize so I can cut them back.
All's well that ends well though, right?

Lucky you are able to cut your HST to size and not have to remake them!

Whitepine--thanks so much. Tweety---what looks like grey on your screen is actually a pretty shade of slate blue with gold leaves. I stayed "close" to Bonnie's colors but just couldn't do the brights this time.
For those who have asked....PLEASE DO NOT CUT ALL YOUR FABRIC INTO STRIPS AT THIS TIME. Bonnie tends to shake things up a bit and uses lots of different sizes in the same blocks. You could end up doing 2", 3" or 4" strips/squares at some point. Only cut what you need to do the first clue.
Just a reminder: Bonnie is doing Quilt Cam tonight at 9:00 p.m. (eastern time)
Happy sewing this week!

I finally got to start my blocks today, with all the holiday company gone. Here are some of mine.... I'm loving the colors and the broken dishes design. Who knows how we will end up putting them together, at this point! Don't cut anything until you are told to.
I changed my cutter blade and flipped my worn out mat over, and the cutting got 200% better! Like butter.... I have to credit my daughter who doesn't even sew for the idea to flip the mat and use the other side. No grid, but I can get what I need from my rulers.
I LOVE the Easy Angle ruler method for HSTs. It saves so much time not having to trim all your HSTs. This is definitely my new preferred method.

Sewbizgirl, flip the map!! What a good idea. My mind isn't in a rut, it's a trench. Another idea that a person on this site mentioned was: "If you have a self healing cutting mat it needs to be re hydrated to stay self healing. When the moisture is gone the mat dries out and will have cut marks and dull your blade. Soak the mat in room temp water for about and hour, let dry. That's all you have to. The mat will be soft and be like new again."
