    Default Summertime Charades

This quilt was a guild challenge. The rules said that I had to use the supplied charm square and button somewhere in the quilt. I used the fabric in the "waves" block and the button (which was a flip flop) in the "swimming pool" block.

We were given 42 summertime words. "Use as many of the items listed below into your quilt as possible. Items can be on the fabric, the name of the block, applique, quilting designs, embellishments, or embroidery. Use your imagination!"

Not only did I use all 42 words, but I used them in order! Each block is an eight-inch applique square. I got the designs from free clipart on the internet. Some of the words were a real challenge to find something that would fit into that small of a square so I took some artistic license with the designs. I came up with the name "Summertime Charades" because it became a real guessing game what word my block represented. Here are the words in the order that I used them:

Sun - Flip Flops - Bathing Suit - June - July - August

    Beach Ball - Flag - Fireworks - Sandals - Shorts - Popsicle

Ice Cream - Sunflower - Watermelon - Swimming Pool - Fan - Sunglasses

    Waves - Tent - Fish - Hat - Boat - Mosquito

    Vacation - Surfing - Motel - Barbecue - Water - Lemonade

Shade - Hot - Towel - Lifeguard - Amusement Park - Roller Coaster

    Plane - Train - Picnic - Splash - Beach Bag - Sandcastle

My favorite block is the "Mosquito." Which is your favorite?

Adorable, and quite commendable of you to take the challenge that seriously.

Very creative in meeting all of the challenges. I like the Popsicle block; I like that it is melting and dripping. I also like the way you quilted it very much.

I love your interpretation of all those concepts. This is such a fun quilt! I love the mosquito, but that vintage fan and the motel "vacancy" sign are really great! And your repeated use of the same fabric colors pulls all the diverse blocks together so well. What a wonderful quilt.
