OK, so just a little background, my mom never sewed in her life nor did any one in my family that I remember. But my mom is an avid counted cross stitcher in the summer and knitter in the winter. As a young girl, my mother desperately tried to teach me her crafts..but hard as a I tried, I could not enjoy either. When by accident I stumbled upon a quilting class and "learned" machine piecing, I enjoyed it and I told my mom that maybe it is the use of the machine that I like. Pause that and move to Hawaii for a while, no sewing machine or anything, thought I'd try to learn needle turn Hawaiian applique, spent the whole day with a kind lady at the quilt shop in Lahaina, her being so patient teaching my the tricks for the points and what not...well, not much got done on that block or any other after that day...Ok, I am deciding I am not much of hand crafter.
Fast forward a year and half later, and I was looking at the many trips we are taking this summer, many hours to be spent at airports, planes, cars and trains..I love to read, but how could I satisfy my quilting addiction being away from my machine? Well, I was inspired to start an English PP project!! Yes, meeee hand sewing!!! I decided to make a very contemporary flower garden using all Kaffe Fassett prints, bought paper hexagons, and cut my fabrics into 2.5'' squares! I put together a little kit with tools I will need and took it along our first trip to Vegas for my brother's wedding! I basted many hexagons and assembled a few! And WOO HOO I like it! I was enjoying alternating reading and sewing during the flight, and loved that there isn't a big learning curve for this, after the first couple of hexagons, I got the drill, and piecing the hexagons together is fun...I am now watching my garden grow..not quite sure what I am going to do with this, but once Fall is here and life settles again, I'll see what I have and decide on what to do..meanwhile, I am thrilled that I found a hand sewing project that I actually enjoy.

They look really good! The neat colors would stand out wonderfully on a white background!

Weird how it grows on you! I'm hand sewing some work on a project that I could very easily do by machine (in fact tried it and don't like it as much) but really like having some hand work to do while watching TV.
