3 Dimensional Flowers
#1
My neighbor took pictures while I made one of the quilt blocks. A couple of comments:
I used a double strand of thread--you do quite a bit of pulling on the thread and you don't want it to brerak.
Color scheme is up to you. A light/dark scheme works well. My neighbor (the artist) thought one in a dark rose batik or a light background would look really good and use the same color for all the petals. Be fun to see what people come up with!

This is your petal before you pull up the gathers

Continue gathering petals on your thread.

Gather petals snugly, then anchor thread so flower is secure.

Circle of fabric for the center yo-yo. I used a circle template for this step.

Turn raw edge down and use a running stitch around the outside.

Pull thread tight and anchor. Yo-yo is done.

It will set on top of the flower petals to cover the center hole in the petal unit.

This shows back of block. Secure end of thread with a couple of small stitches.

Select fabric --cut into 5 inch squares

Use double strand neutral thread (I used a dark color just so you could see it.

Use a running stitch along the raw edges

Pull gathers tight to make first petal

6 petals make a flower.

Now to assemble flower on the block. The underlying leaf pattern was ironed on then edges zig-zagged. Lay petal unit in the center then use stab stitches up and down around the edge to anchor it to the base.

Use blind stitch and stitch the yo-yo to the petal unit.

I just posted a tutorial on making these flowers. I didn't know how to get this onto the first posting so it would be at the top. Hopefully, those of you who wanted to know how to make those flowers will see this posting.
The quilt block is 10 1/2 inches square. The leaf pattern is fused onto the block then stitched around the outer edge.
If you have questions I'll try to answer them. I hope the tutorial is understandable.
Happy flower making!
ps My friend was using this technique with much smaller squares and putting a magnet on the back. Hers looked like sunflowers. I don't remember how she covered the center.

Thank you for this tutorial. I am gonna make this for my granddaughter. What size was your circle template? It looks like you folded the 5" square and stitched the two sides, then gathered right? It is just darling. I love it! You did a good job. Thanks! :)
