What several people in my guild have done is make a cover for a rectangular board or table. Mine is 3'x6'. I use it mainly for pressing large pieces of fabric.

My DH and I made one about two years ago and I just replaced the top fabric last month. When I do not have my ironing board set up I place my big board on the ping pong table (which I use for everything) for small ironing. I need to find a sturdier ironing board stand as it is a bit unsteady.
