Nadine, charms are 5" squares. So just off top of my head I'm thinking the finished block 'should' be 9-9 1/2"..Anyone else agree?

I agree with the 9" because once you sew the triangles together, you cut again and you'd have another 1/2" gone.

Thanks for working out the finished size of block. As a beginner I was struggling to do this for myself. One thing about patchwork is that it is a great way to brush up on basic math. One more question though, what is a piano key border, please?

A piano key border is simply strips sewn together and then cut into whatever size you want. For example, if you sew 2 strips that are 2.5" wide and the WOF (width of fabric), then sub cut those into 4.5", you can then sew those blocks together and you would have alternating stripes of those two colors, and your finished border would be 4 inches wide. I like to sew a variety of pairs to get in more fabrics. This is also a great way to use up short scraps.

You could just as easily sub-cut your strips 6", 8 inches, whatever.

Thanks for that. Sounds just the thing to finish off my rail fence quilt.
