On my daisy, three times I went through the process of coloring, applying the gel, let dry and then washed with my fingers in a shallow dish. I was adding more details and depth of color each time.

With summertime it was easy to put them on the deck rail and let them air dry thoroughly. Since I hadn't done any sandwiching/quilting with it I just thought I would experiment. I am very thankful to know now.

This week I colored some blank areas on black and white fabric. When I applied gel, it sorta ran/bled. It added to my design but I figure I must have forgotten something. Do you know why it bled?

janeknapp 09-10-2011 05:29 PM

Linda, I don't know why it bled. It hasn't happened to me.

Was the fabric damp? Did you go outside the colored area? Was it on a flat horizontal surface? Did the ink from the colored pencil run or was it the black on the original fabric? Did you prewash the fabric...maybe the sizing did not let the gel absorb into the fabric?

Oh! LOL I painted aloe gel outside the line. Silly me. Must have had my mind elsewhere... Thanks, Jane. :-D

If you are interested in using this technique on artist trading cards, bookmarks, or doorhangers (I haven't done one of these yet, but kids might like to make them), go to this topic on the website:

Izzy sent me this note:

I bought the 24 set of Inktense water colors from a seller on Ebay. I paid $15 plus $4 for shipping. Since then, I have had the chance to go to a Hobby Lobby and found they had very little selection of Derwent pencils and they were more expensive. A 24 tin of the Inktense colors was not even available but reg. water colors was around $30+. I just received my set and eager to try them. Hope that helps you. Thank you so much for your tutorial.

My own Derwent Inktense color chart for 72 pencils

I noticed the color chart did not come up on post #42, so here is one I created which I advise you to do for yourself. I colored on fabric and then used aloe vera gel on half of the color to show the vibrance when gel is applied.

Miss Edie 07-27-2013 01:55 PM

I have a silly question. Is the aloe vera gel mentioned here the kind you find near the hand lotion or pharmacy area in the store or is it specially packaged, processed, etc. for crafting use?

mzzzquilts 07-27-2013 02:11 PM

I found this info in the tutorial mentioned in the first post in this thread:

Clear aloe vera gel (NOT lotion) -
Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera 100% gel Pure No Color Added in the hand lotion aisle at Walmart (least
expensive I’’ve found at about $4 for 12 oz.)

Miss Edie 07-27-2013 02:21 PM

Thank you so much!! I'm so eager to get started, just bought the 12-set of Inktense pencils, next the aloe vera. Thanks again.

Thank You for your very interesting tutorial and all the links. This is something I have wanted to try but was afraid to get my feet wet. now I am looking forward to getting started. Sent for a catalog. Again-Thank You.

janeknapp 07-28-2013 04:30 AM

I hope you enjoy this process. It can be very additive. If so, you will want the 72 pencil set. There is a great article in the Aug.-Sept. Quilting Arts Magazine by Ana Buzzalino called "From Sketch to Stitch to Color with Inktense Pencils." If you don't have access to this magazine, send me a private message and I can tell you more about it. Ana uses fabric medium as her moistening agent when she colors AFTER she quilts.

This is very cool. Thank you for the tutorial. I have booked it.

This quilt was made with alphabet blocks that were colored with Inktense pencils by my mother. They were the last ones she made before she passed away. I made the quilt for my mother's great grandson.

I have compared moistening agents (water, clear aloe vera gel, plain Liquitex Fabric Medium and thinned) to check on color change and softness of the fabric before and after washing. This PDF file shows and explains my results. Choices might depend on whether one is coloring before or after quilting.

Thank you for the tut and I do have a question. What is the best way to cover a large area without getting it saturated on the back of your quilted project?

I've never heard of this technique. Happened upon this thread...
That quilt is darling! I'm sorry about your Mom...what wonderful memories you have from this quilt.

Kif

Cricket Quilts ... I'm not sure I understand your question. How large is the area you want to cover? Aloe vera gel doesn't really get the fabric very wet. If you use the gel to moisten the dry color before layering with batting and backing, it is no problem. The fabric is often dry within 5 minutes. If you are laying with cotton batting, it would never go through to the backing. I use wool batting a lot, but I'm not ever coloring a large area.
