Hi there, I also felt a bit frustrated with the circles on the dresden plate so decided to see what one would look like with an octagonal centre. I have always been a very symmetrical person and feel that circles don't always look exactly round no matter how careful we are. The octagon with it's eight sides is very easy to position, especially on a dresden plate made with 16 pieces as each point matches every second seam or half way betweeen the seams, which ever you prefer. The dresden plate with it's peaked edges then matches really well with the peaks on the octagonal centre. Just had to try one and I loved it. I am a convert since then. Just love perfect corners. I love this and thanks for the clear instructions. I do not own and cannot find a dresden ruler where i live in SA. Is there any other way i can measure the angles with a normal inch quilting ruler. Would appreciate assistance here. :P

3 1/2" across the top 1" across the bottom total length of this ruler is 10" --Mark the template/ruler every 12" going up the length. For the 3 1/2" blade, you make the cut at thel 3 1/2" length. Clear as mud? |

This tutorial is great. I'll be traveling this week and will be in some quilt shops in Amarillo and hope to find the ruler. When you applique the plate to the backing how do you do it?
