What a brilliant idea!!

RAChhap 03-30-2011 11:31 AM

Thanks, this was great. We get 4-6 phone books a year and no one wants to take them for recycling so I am glad to have this tip. You should send it into Fons & Porter, Sewing with Nancy or some such where they give you a little prize for tips, I'm sure you would win.

Michelle48350 03-30-2011 11:54 AM

I love the phone book idea. Thanks!

Vaguely same subject - just a little different. I have an old quilt top, strips sewn, then diamonds cut on paper put together into stars. I found one piece of paper dqated 1932. Long story short - it was started by Hubby's grandmother, then his Mom worked on it. He inherited it and I kept telling him I would quilt it for him. Well, he is gone (died) and I'd like to quilt it for my step-daughter (3 generations having worked on it). Question - is there anyway to preserve the old pieces of paper, proving it's age?

OOPS. Sorry !! You're not finished posting :)

I used a bedskirt I got from Goodwill for $1.00 and all I needed was flannel on the back, no batting. I'm not sure I'd have the patience to tear all the paper off for the large size I made. No, I'm sure, LOL.

redbug 03-30-2011 04:25 PM

Great quilt. I have made many of these, seems everyone likes the bright colors, just finished one for run for life in each of my 2 close cities here in Fl.I used paper for the first few but didn't like ripping off the paper so now I buy bed skirts at the thrift stores, the skirts has a lot of fabric and the center works well for the base for the string quilts and you can just leave it on very light weight

Thanks for the tute & will try one soon

jaymemade 03-30-2011 06:52 PM

I like how you used the same color and size in the center of each block. It ties them together in a nice way. I will have to try this!

biscuitqueen 03-30-2011 07:36 PM

thanks for sharing this with us.

Your string blocks are really lovely and I like the blue you used as a focal color. I do mine with telephone book pages and foundation cloth. I prefer the cloth foundation that stays in. Once you pull the paper off, everything is on the bias. I have also done strings on dryer sheets. These turn into a diamond pattern, or cut paper 6.5 x 9.5 inc.

Thank-you for posting this tutorial along with the link to the heartstrings site. :)

klarina 03-30-2011 09:23 PM

My only problem is not having enough time for such great projects like this. Thanks for sharing!

rushdoggie 03-30-2011 09:31 PM

OK, stupid newbie question: why do you need a foundation piece? Why can't you just sew strips together?

newbiequilter 03-30-2011 09:45 PM

I am going to run out to the recycle toter and grab my old phone book which I threw in there a couple of days ago. Thank you for this great tut.

vicki s 03-31-2011 01:30 AM

I have never done paper piecing so maybe I dont get the whole concept of this but why didnt you just sew you strips together and cut the square without the paper?

Nolee, You can use muslin or scrap fabric for a foundation if you want to. No tearing necessary and others have mentioned this. Might be perfect for you! Good luck.

Sorry, rushdoggie I do not know the answer to this. I was following the original link I posted but switched it with the telephone book paper. Another suggested that after you tear the paper off it is on the bias and I am guessing this is why the foundation is used, so there wouldn't be any stretching.

You can always try it without the paper and see what happens.

I love your profile pic by the way. Cute doggy!

See answer above to rushdoggie. I followed the directions on the heartstring's site. Don't know what would happen if I did it this way.

Now how are you going to finish? With that I mean are you going to border, sash or just sew squares together continuously? Be sure to post when you finish.

Looks fascinating. How do you make them?

campion 05-26-2011 09:42 AM

Hi I followed instructions from a book bySharon Pederson called Reversible quilts.
You basic cut a square of wadding/batting then cut your strips at different widths and a triangle, then it's really just flip and stich

That is only a very short version

I posted a tute in the tutorial section.

I will put all four blocks together to cover the top of a double bed and then a center strip border to frame and then not sure on the other borders yet. Maybe a piano key border to tie in some more scraps.

Don't know if you ever got an answer to your question ... You can sew the strips together and cut the square, but then you have a lot of bias edges and you have possible stretching to contend with. Using a foundation, whether paper or cloth, provides stability. You can also use short lengths of strips.
