I just used my Brother's J foot, which is the foot for zigzag stitching. And yes you do go through the rope with the needle. I know it sounds "machine abusive" but it's not, at least mine didn't seem to mind at all. :)

I wrap my cord before I sew too. I can't imagine doing it the way shown on that other website. Too time consuming and ...well... fragmented. Once I get the fabric and cord glued together (gotta love that Elmer's glue), the baskets come right together!. Thanks Eddie.

you do some assum work on what ever you do.

ghernandez 04-02-2010 02:21 PM

I am very new to quilting. But I was reading and looking at the tutorial you have on these bowls. They look very interesting. I think I an going to get the supplies this weekend and try and make one. What kinda of thread do you use. Like regular sewing thread or heavy duty sewing thread. I just brought a new brother sewing machine, so I need to put it to good use. Thank You for the very good instructions.

Eddie 04-02-2010 09:37 PM

I just used regular sewing thread, nothing special about it.

Have any of you made rag rugs like this? I am going to try this week. Bowls are great but I want a couple of rugs and my hands won't pull thru the rope and fabric. Great job of teaching, Eddie.

Rina 04-05-2010 11:20 AM

Thanks Eddie, I am definitely going to try this! I have a piece of material that I don't really like! :-)

Judy The Harley Girl 04-07-2010 07:14 PM

I absolutely love this ! Do you think it would be possiable to continue on and somehow make a small rug ?

crafterbarbara 04-08-2010 08:10 AM

I am going to work on a rug with this process next week. I will let you know how it works. Can't see why not. Just keep going around flat.

craftybear 04-18-2010 05:18 PM

thanks for the tutorial!

Judy The Harley Girl 04-19-2010 06:48 PM

Thanks Eddie for the wonderful idea and the instructions,it looks the perfect way to make a rag rug. Oh,yeah, they also carry the clotheline rope and Dollar General Stores,I don't know if ya'll have them in your area but a "real" inexpensive store, thus , dollar store !!

MaterialPunk 04-27-2010 07:14 PM

Thank you for the detailed tutorial, Eddie! I attempted this a couple time but ended in tears when my needles continued to snap. I spoke to a lady in Paducah this last week who gave me some pointers so with her encouragement and this awesome post I will be trying again very soon. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes! :-D

OLDNTATTED 05-07-2010 04:27 PM

You Da Man!! Eddie.
I can only wish to be as good as you someday.
Is that new machine room ready yet. It's almost here isn't it?

OLDNTATTED 05-07-2010 08:24 PM

adrianlee 05-08-2010 05:43 PM

Hi Eddie! I can see right off I bought the wrong kind of rope for this. Well, hubby has a new rope for the boat. Next time at Walmart I'll get a cotton rope. Have you played yet with the new quilting machine? Waiting to hear what projects you got lined up.

CarrieAnne 05-09-2010 06:51 AM

Laura Li 05-19-2010 11:46 AM

Thanks, this tutorial helped not only with the bowls, but seems I could use this application for a rug using larger rope. Excellent!

Aren't the fun to make, I Miss Embellish Queen so I add beads and bobbles and what knots to finished product. Thanks Eddie

Helene 05-23-2010 09:04 PM

I love it and seems to be simple to make ...

Helen1 08-12-2010 12:52 PM

Wow, never seen those before. Thank you. Hope to find some line and have a go.

Psychomomquilter 08-14-2010 04:22 AM

hmmmm, can a rug be made like this? a small one , a throw rug?

oh and another thing, about the sewing, do you do a small amount then sew the x's? is that hard to sew on the sewing machine? looks thrifty, frugal , excess scraps used etc,

does look good, the bowls, that is. Mary

Eddie 08-14-2010 06:53 AM

Yes, I've seen small rugs made like this as well. I made placemats for our breakfast area table, too. I only sew the X once, at the very beginning of the spiral to hold it in place. Then you start at the beginning of the center doing the zigzag.

Psychomomquilter 08-14-2010 02:06 PM

Eddie, thanks for the info! yes I'd like to see about making
placemats, coasters too. Mary

LC1562 08-16-2010 02:20 PM

Wow, can't wait to try this. Looking for the clothes line rope. OK, when you run short, what do you do to add a new piece?

I'd just do a straight stitch across the two ends back and forth several times to hold them together, then use a good bit of glue when wrapping those ends.

LC1562 08-16-2010 03:40 PM

Thanks for the tip--can't wait to try this!!!!

RuthBrowne 08-18-2010 07:03 PM

I found some at a dollar store

bmanley 08-19-2010 05:28 AM

I love this. Your work is so neat. I am going to do this as soon as I get my clothesline. Thanks so much.

BellaBoo 08-20-2010 07:55 AM

I love your instructions, thanks! I couldn't find the cotton clothesline so I bought 1/4" cotton rope. I didn't cover it with fabric as the rope looked muslin colored and natural. One package cost about $3 at Ace hardware, enough for a small size bowl. I used variegated thread and the design was nice on the natural rope. I then found synthetic clothesline at the Dollar Store. It's puffy but sews up great for coasters and small projects. The clothesline I found at Walmart is synthetic but better then then the Dollar store. It is not puffy. It made a nice sturdy bowl.

hperttula123 09-09-2010 06:09 PM

That is awesome.

maggie2122 09-16-2010 11:09 PM
