Mincemeat Cookie Tradition
My father always loved mincemeat cookies at Christmas. Mincemeat is actually chopped up fruit such as apples and raisins and dates back to the Olde English times. I've continued making them although he passed away many years ago as my husband and daughter-in-law loves them. Always paid less then $7 a jar for it. This year my grocery doesn't carry it. Searching on line, Amazon wants over $26 a jar for it. What?? Found a place called Jacks Country Store that is selling it for almost $16 a jar plus shipping....slightly cheaper for the same item. I broke down and ordered two jars. So the tradition will continue....my fabric buying will be put on hold.
What have you bought that has sky-rocketed in price?

I too use this for cookies .... humm ... havent looked for it yet. Maybe I better!!
Anyways found an "Allrecipe" link for mincemeat (no meat). While I have not tried it, for me it has all the right things in it, so that it should taste right. Besides I always doctor the store bought up with extra spices and fruits.

My Mom always made her own fruit mincemeat for mincemeat pies. If you buy all the ingredients separately, it probably would cost just as much. I will make shortbread cookies this Christmas but the price of butter is up as well.

Actually, quite a few of the stores have had it on sale recently.
Foodland has it this week at $3.99, Tartan!
LindaSchipper ..... Would you care to share your cookie recipe, please? I've never heard of mincemeat cookies, but am sure they would be delicious, as I have always loved the mincemeat traditional two crust pies or tarts, custard pies, and fruit loaves.
To me, the store bought never tastes nearly as good as the homemade. But have found that adding chopped apples and cherries has helped bring it closer to my liking.

I had always used the recipe that was on the jar, but they took it off years ago for some reason. I had to sift through my mothers recipe box to find a recipe. However it says to add only 1 1/2 cups of mincemeat, instead I use 1/2 jar to make them extra moist ( dad was toothless in his later years). I put wax paper between the layers of cookies when I store them so they don't stick together. You can use either the regular or the brandy/rum flavored. Guess which one i like better....
3 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 cups vegetable shortening (Crisco)
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 large eggs
1/2 jar mincemeat
Bake at 400 degrees for 12 minutes
These won't last long as they are super moist and delicious!
But I will be looking up the recipe on allrecipes just to see if I need to have it around for next year.

I love mincemeat cookies too, though I haven't made them in a very long time. I tried looking for mincemeat and couldn't find it, but it turns out it's seasonal. I bought some at Walmart recently, but they only have it during the holidays.
