New England Travel, input please!!
Many years ago we went through the Green Mountains and the White Mountains on the way to Cape Cod. DH would like to do a travelling getaway to New England again. We got tour books from CAA (the Canadian version of AAA) but they don't have an overview of what to see and do in each state, just specifically by city. But if you don't know what to do, how do you know what city to look up?? lol. We are talking about a spring (April or May) trip to avoid the busy-ness and heat of summer.
Would you kind folks please give me some ideas? And, by the way, I like quilts and he's a woodworker so while we show an interest in each other's hobby, neither hobby can monopolize the trip. But a quilt shop or two plus excellent fabric prices would be nice to know!
1. We talked about having Rhode Island as our destination. So, what should we see and do in RI? Is that a mistake? Should we have somewhere in Maine or Mass as the destination?
2. We'd like to go through the Green and White Mtns again. We would probably enter the US at Queenston-Lewiston and take the NYS thruway to go east. Are there places along the way or nearby in eastern NY State, Vermont, NH and Mass. that we should visit?
Thanks so much!
Michelle

Hi Michelle: My husband and I have been going to the southern Maine coast for years. Scenic, beautiful, always affordable (especially just a little off season). Great shopping, food, quilt stores. Probably 40-60 miles up the Maine Turnpike you can go to Freeport for the day and enjoy LL Bean and the other outlets. If you'd rather be in a city, Portland Maine offers a lot.
You asked about eastern NYS. The Lake George area in the Adirondack Mountains is lovely and probably not quite an hour from the VT boarder.
NH is beautiful, especially down by Lake Winapasake (sorry, I know my spelling is dead wrong), and there are several quilt shops including Keepsake Quilts in Center Harbor. The tiny strip of coastline known as Hampton Beach is a fun spot. Very 50-s retro appearing.
Any of the above just google and they will mail you a wonderful guide book.
