Hello from South Carolina

Greetings everyone,
My daughter's school was the sole school selected in the state to create a 5 X 5 inch patriotic square for a quilt of the US. She was asked to head up this project and it's due this week. From childhood, I've seen quilts being made by older ladies but I never actually took part in the making of one. So, as I surfed the web for information on quiltmaking, I stumbled upon this site and it has truly excited me. I'm paniked as well because I know we have our work cut out for us this week as we embark upon making that square without any resources. All comments and ideas are welcomed!

Hello from Scotland!
That's quite a challenge, and a 5x5 block is pretty small for detail. Is the block supposed to represent your state? If so applique in the shape of your state bird or flower could be used, appliqued on top of a simple block (pin wheel or nine patch)both of which can be machined stitched. Or maybe a simple red stitch outline of the state bird or flower stitched on white could be given a patched border -(similar in design to the pics attached maybe?) I'll try and find some websites for you to look at if you like !?
