Do you add borders to the side first or the top?

For regular straight borders, sides first, then top & bottom.
Unless there is something directional in the fabric that I'm trying to take advantage of that won't work if the sides go on first.

Doesn't matter if it is a square quilt. If it is a rectangle, the longest sides first.

Thank you all so much. I am fairly new to quilting and I knew I could find the answer here.
