Applique Tech.
#1
I was at a retreat a few weeks ago, and saw a lady doing lovely applique. She first traced the pattern onto the back of the fabric using Carbon paper, then basted the applique fabric on the front, and then needle turned it under. Has anyone here used this technique? or do you know what exactly it is called so I could possibly find correct instructions for this.
Thanks

Here is one sample. I do needle turn, but usually mark on the top and turn to the line. Maybe if it was a light background that is why she marked on the back or did you mean back ground?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axDBl7lJuJs

I tried this tech recently because there was a post here on the board. Here is a link to the thread which has several links to this method. I tried it and it worked really well for me...Good luck! http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-34829-1.htm

Here is also a You tube on this type of applique too. This is the original form of applique or english method.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkJ8xk8Fklo&feature=related
There are many You Tube applique tutorials on that same You Tube site.

I believe it's called the basting method. I use it in my Baltimore Album quilts.
I trace on the back, place my motif fabric on the front ( I cut a piece of fabric bigger than the motif), right side up, take a basting stitch all around the drawn line from the back.
Then you begin to needle turn from the front, removing the basting stitches about an inch or so in front of your needle. It works really well for small pieces, curves, and stuffed applique.
What I like most is there are no templates or freezer paper to deal with, no starching, just fabric, needle & thread.
This month one of the flowers on our baltimore album BOM is featuring this technique, as well as ruching a rose. On march 8, go to the thread and look at the tute I will be posting.

The technique is called back basting and is a great way to do needleturn. Here's a link to some really good instructions on how to do it:
