I just got my quilt back from the quilters, and she did a wonderful job. The quilt is going to someone with a double bed. My bed is a queen. When I put it on my bed, it is really long, but the side are not so much. It is 80 x 107. I'm not so upset about the lenght, but I hope the sides will be o.k. I figure it was either me or the pattern that went wrong, but I am dissapointed after all that work. I think I put on one more row than was needed.

A double mattress top is 54x75. Your size would allow a 13" drop on each side, which is enough for many people. It also allows 16" top and bottom drop, although that is deceiving since we never know if someone likes to tuck the quilt under the pillows, or has a footboard or headboard, or ???
This site quotes several "authorities" on quilt sizes - http://equilters.com/library/quilt_i...bed_sizes.html
According to one of the "authorities", your quilt is just about right for a double bed, and according to another it is perfect for a twin. I wouldn't worry about it too much, since quilts can be used is so many different ways and there really is no standard size. If the recipient has a headboard and footboard (and if the design permits) another option is to lay it crosswise on the bed!

It's so hard to judge now since the mattresses come in so many thicknesses. Then if you buy a new one, it always seems to be different than the last. I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe they could lay it across the foot of the bed or at an angle like in the magazines. I've been know to shift the quilt more to the visible side of the bed if it's narrow! :)

Hi everyone, Thanks for the info on double bed sizes. Here is a photo of the quilt. The pattern in Afternoon Delight. I have tucked in the pillows, so the lenght isn't a problem. I hope the sides will be better on a double bed.
