Bobbin washers

Bobbin washers
Hi, am wondering if using bobbin washers are important for quilting and if there is a way to make them yourself. And just what is the purpose for them exactly. Thanks!

Am interested to see what everyone has to say about these. I bought some a few years back but have not had much success with them. Maybe I am doing something wrong??

I use them in my bobbin for piecing and machine quilting. The vendor told me you have to take out the spring in the bobbin case, if it has one, and then put in the washer. It's easy to take out and easy to put back in if you decide to. Picture here: http://www.premiersewing.com/bobbin-...in-case/spring. You can see a picture of the empty bobbin case with no spring and the washers here: http://www.daystyledesigns.com/magicgeniewashers.htm

These slick space age washers eliminate the backlash in the bobbin when changing directions at high speed. Backlash creates "birds nests" in free-motion quilting and embroidery. Just drop a LITTLE GENIE in the bobbin case, replace the bobbin and you're good to go!.

I didn't notice a difference, but it might depend on the bobbin type. The bobbins in my machine are curved on the outside, not flat, so there isn't as much contact to the washer as there would be on the flat ones. I think I've read that it makes a difference if they are vertical vs. drop in too. Mine is a drop in.
