Awhile back a started a topic on whether or not you use a hoop or frame or nothing to hand quilt.Turned out interesting. Now I would like to know if you use a thimble.4 of the 5 people I quilt use nothing. The oldest one uses a thimble(70).

I used to use a silver thimble, but then I stopped biting my fingernails. I found my nail breaking a lot when it would bend inside the thimble. Now, I use a leather thimble with an opening for my fingernail. :) I really like it.

I have always used a thimble. I learned to use one when my mother taught me to embroider as a child. That was interesting...my mom's large thimble on my child's hand. Later, somewhere we found a small thimble that fit me. I got so used to it I can't hand sew without one. I just doesn't feel natural to me. I also use it when I do counted cross stitch.

I have never been able to use a metal thimble, but I do use a leather thimble...the goatskin one is the one I like the best...it is double thick. Elaine Considine is the one who makes the ones that I get.
